Thank You for Serving

At the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, 103 years ago, the armistice marking the end of World War One was signed. November 11th is Armistice Day, although the United States celebrates all armed forces members with Veterans Day, and the Commonwealth of Nations, France, and Belgium celebrate Remembrance Day.

A Record-Breaking Kind of Day

The Guinness World Records Day is underway, with the theme of Super Skills. Some new records have already been set, such as Dinesh Sunar’s 21 blindfolded standing backwards somersaults in 1 minute. Other record-breaking attempts are still happening, like most Rubik’s cubes solved in 24 hours, and most hula hoops spun while on stilts.

Midwestern Fireball Lights Up the Sky

The American Meteor Society received reports, of a fireball streaking across the sky Tuesday night. People in Wisconsin, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, and other nearby states, spotted the giant flash of light. Did you see it? It may have been a meteor, or space junk burning up as it entered the atmosphere.

Is Your Pumpkin Squishy Yet?

Halloween is long gone. What will you do with your jack-o’-lanterns?  Leave your pumpkin outside as a science project, to watch it slowly mildew and rot. Let squirrels or groundhogs snack on it. Donate old pumpkins to a farm, to feed their animals. You could even have a pumpkin-chucking contest, into a compost pile!

Your Phone’s Home

Today is Area Code Day. In the old days, a telephone operator had to connect your call. You told them the location, and a numerical address, like Murray Hill 5-9975. After area codes were invented, people could call directly, without the operator’s help. Now, there are so many mobile phones, some areas have 2 codes!

Sunny Cupcake Day

Cupcakes are so yummy, but it’s hard to choose a favorite flavor. Don’t worry about choosing today, because it’s Vanilla Cupcake Day! You can eat one while watching Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, and their friends, since it’s also Sesame Street Day. The children’s TV show was first broadcast in 1969.

A Pyramid of Plastic

There’s a new pyramid in Egypt, but it’s not made of bricks. To draw attention to pollution, the 3-story tall pyramid is made of plastic. The 20-ton structure contains the equivalent of 1,000,000 plastic bottles, collected from the Nile River. It marks the start of the 100 Year Cleanup, to remove plastic trash worldwide.

New Ponds Have Frogs Leaping for Joy

Scientists in Switzerland, have helped endangered frog populations grow, by increasing their habitat. Frogs need plenty of places to choose from, to lay their eggs and escape predators. The scientists built 422 small ponds to help them migrate, and the frog populations exploded. They just needed a little extra space.

Force Fields Up!

Now that it’s getting colder, people are spending more time inside. Remember to stay safe from COVID, by washing your hands often with soap, and using hand sanitizer. It can protect you from colds and the flu as well. Wearing a mask indoors, also helps. Most importantly, get your COVID booster and flu vaccines.
