Liam Kalbskopf is rounding out his year, with a new world record. The 4th grader holds the new title, for most cans stacked into a pyramid in 30 seconds, by someone under 16. He created a 6-layer pyramid, by stacking 21 cans of vegetables. I hope he didn’t drop any on his toes!

Roads Paved in Trash

All over the world, roads are being made with unusual materials. India has 60,000 miles of roads, made from recycled plastic. An Australian highway was made with millions of used face masks, while Pennsylvania is testing roads made with old plastic bags. They withstand extreme temperature changes, and resist potholes, cracking, and water damage.

Do you celebrate Kwanzaa? The week-long celebration of African-American culture, runs from December 26th to January 1st, with a feast on the 6th day. Red, black, or green candles are lit each night, to observe the 7 principles of Kwanzaa, which include unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.

A Blanket of Butterflies

Every year Western monarch butterflies show up, in California’s Pismo Beach Butterfly Grove. Park rangers track the butterflies’ migration each year, as they arrive by the thousands. The orange-and-black butterflies, quietly flutter on every tree, like a beautiful living curtain. You can visit the spectacular butterfly show, until the migration tapers off in February.

Christmas for Days

Stop. Don’t take down your Christmas decorations yet. It’s only the 4th day of Christmas! You could celebrate Twelve Days of Christmas, by giving a gift each day. Any late packages, could still technically arrive on time. Enjoy the holidays, by baking cookies, spending time with your family, and singing the 12 Days of Christmas.

126 years ago, Auguste and Louis Lumière started the motion picture industry. The brothers showed 10 short films, to an audience of 33 paying customers, in Paris France. The moving pictures showed ordinary events, and each movie was less than 1 minute long, but the audience was amazed. Today, Short Film Day, commemorates that movie history moment.
