December is here, and so is Christmas Lights Day. The first tree lights were invented in the 18 80’s, by Edward Johnson. Before that, people used to decorate their Christmas trees with candles, which doesn’t sound safe at all! Now we have LED lights that stay cool, and color-changing lights that you can program.

Keep Fighting Racism

Today is Rosa Parks Day, commemorating the date she became a hero in the civil rights movement. Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955, for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a bus in Alabama. A statue in Montgomery Alabama, honors Rosa’s act of courage, and the fight for equality.

New Home Construction for Penguins

The Galapagos Islands are home to the most northerly-dwelling penguin. The Galapagos penguin is also one of the most endangered. They nest in burrows inside hollow lava tubes, but dangerous predators also shelter there. Biologists are giving penguins a little help, by digging new burrows, in rocks on the opposite side of the island.

Are You Smarter Than a Cephalopod?

There are plenty of stories, about how smart octopuses are. The cuttlefish is another type of clever cephalopod. Scientists did an experiment often used with children, to see if cuttlefish could learn to refuse a treat, if they knew they’d get a better one later. Like humans, chimpanzees, and crows, they passed the test.

Today is Stay Home Because You’re Well Day. It’s more fun to have a day off, when you’re not sick! Whip up some chocolate mousse, because it’s Mousse Day, and serve it in a glass jar, for Mason Jar Day. Tell people to back away from your yummy dessert, since it’s Personal Space Day.

Today is Package Protection Day. As more people order products online, there are reports of deliveries disappearing. Security cameras have caught many porch thieves in action. Sometimes, the thief is an animal, like a bear. Human criminals should beware, because sometimes the package is a decoy, full of glitter and poop!

Did you know today, is Computer Security Day? Update your operating systems, and install security updates to catch spyware and malware. Most importantly, use strong passwords. Try using random words, and definitely don’t use 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 or PASSWORD for your password. And remember, never give out your personal information to anyone online, including nosy online quizzes.

Baby Oryx Works on Growing Horns

The scimitar-horned oryx, is a species of North African antelope, that has gone extinct in the wild. The Lehigh Valley Zoo in Pennsylvania, is helping to increase the population, with their herd. They announced the birth of a baby scimitar-horned oryx. The mother, named Too Haute, and her calf, Eclipse, are both doing well.

Let the Cat Out of the Bag

Many people traveled over the Thanksgiving holidays, but a sneaky cat also tried to tag along. Airport security in New York were scanning suitcases, when they spotted the x-ray of a cat. The cat had climbed in unnoticed while someone was packing. The cat was safely returned home, before the passenger continued their trip.
