Sunshine and Happiness

NASA has released a photo, of a very happy Sun. The Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the image, showing dark spots in the shape of eyes and an adorable smile. The spots are actually coronal holes, where bursts of solar wind were released into space, but it’s more fun to think the Sun was smiling.

Watch the Blood Moon

Don’t forget, on Tuesday, a lunar eclipse will occur. When the sun and moon are on opposite sides of the planet, called syzygy, the Earth’s shadow falls on the moon, making it appear red. Unlike a solar eclipse, you don’t need eye protection to view the show. Just wake up super-duper early, and check it out.

Bittersweet Bears

Gather all your teddy bears, and start hugging. It’s Hug A Bear Day! Although wild bears also look cute and fuzzy, it’s best to leave them alone! It’s also Bittersweet Chocolate With Almonds Day. It’s not the most common candy bar, so today would be a good day to make your own delicious treat!

Get a Loaf of That Mosaic

Last week, a team of 5 bakers in Mexico, created the world’s largest bread mosaic. They baked 20,689 loaves of bread, then used the bread like tiles, to create a huge 2,222-square-foot picture. The mosaic was an image of La Catrina, a skeleton figure used on the Mexican Day of the Dead.

New Little Owl Discovered

A new type of owl, has been discovered on the island of Principe, off the west coast of Africa. Scientists studying the owl, determined it’s a unique species. The Principe scops owl’s scientific name, is Otus bikegila. It was named after a local park ranger, who first spotted the owl in the 19 90’s.

Sleep In a Little Longer

In many parts of the world, you got an extra hour to sleep in this morning. That’s because the clocks were set back one hour, since Daylight Saving Time ended. Not all countries use Daylight Saving, and some use different dates, so it can be confusing! Just remember, to spring forward, and fall back!

Could you find your way out of a forest? Learn some survival skills, like navigating by the stars, or making your own compass, for Marooned Without A Compass Day! Practice walking straight lines, by following 3 lined-up objects. Ancient Vikings used the Sun’s shadows to navigate, as well as glowing crystals called sunstones.

Cheesy Saxophones

Today is Saxophone Day, in honor of the mellow brass woodwind instrument. Adolphe Sax developed the instrument in 1846. What would you name an instrument, if you invented one? It’s also Nachos Day, so start with a plate of tortilla chips. Melt some cheese on top, and add jalapenos, salsa, or whatever else you’d like!

Adopt a Doggie Artist

A one-eared rescue dog is named Van Gogh, after the famous artist with a missing ear. Jaclyn Gartner also taught the pit bull-boxer mix, how to paint. She blobs paint onto a canvas, covered with peanut butter-coated plastic. When Van Gogh licks the plastic, his tongue becomes the brush, painting the canvas underneath.

Planet Is a Big Softie

Astronomers have discovered a giant fluffy planet, the size of Jupiter. The exo-planet orbits a red dwarf star 580 light years away, and is about the density of a marshmallow. Red dwarf stars are much cooler than our star, the Sun, so there’s no danger the squishy planet will get toasted.
