Helping Birds Find the Ocean

Puffins are cute birds with big orange beaks, that live in the North Atlantic. Newly-hatched puffins find their way to the ocean, by following the moonlight. Some pufflings get confused, and fly towards lights in the city instead. People help, by forming puffling patrols. They capture lost birds, and toss them off the cliffs.

A 7,000,000-Mile Journey Ends

Yesterday’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART, was a success. After flying 7,000,000 miles, a spacecraft the size of a vending machine was smashed into an asteroid, to slightly change its course. NASA launched the spacecraft nearly a year ago, and everyone was overjoyed that it hit its target.

Alligator Enjoys the Lazy River

Splash Cove is a waterpark in Illinois, with a Lazy River ride. Most visitors float the slow waterway in a tube, but the last visitor this season didn’t need one. It was an alligator, from the Scoville Zoo. The 39-year-old gator, named G, enjoyed swimming and floating, without any pesky swimmers to bother him.

New Island Appears, But Not for Long

Last month, a submerged volcano in the Tonga Islands, started oozing lava and rocks underwater. While ash and steam rose to the surface, the lava formed a mound that spread 24,000 square meters. It has poked up through the water, forming a new island. It’ll probably sink again, before anyone can walk on it.

Pancakes and Apples

Today is Johnny Appleseed Day, the birthday of John Chapman in 1774. He traveled around the United States, planting orchards of apple trees. He ate out of his tin hat, which is why he’s often depicted with a pot on his head. It’s also Lumberjack Day, originally created as an excuse to eat pancakes!
