Chocolate lovers, today is your lucky day. It’s Chocolate Day! People have been eating chocolate, made from the seeds of cacao trees, for 4000 years or more. Be sure to watch some cartoons while you enjoy your chocolate, because it’s also Animation Day. Create your own stop-motion video or flip-book animation!

Find Your Own Snack

Today is Wild Foods Day. Your backyard might be full of delicious food. Blackberries, apples, and other fruit are easy to identify. Dandelions, chickweed, clover, and wild onions taste great, as long as your lawn is pesticide-free. Black walnuts take some work, to get inside. Don’t eat anything, until checking with an adult.

Frankie Needs a Big Bandana

Celebrate Frankenstein Friday, by watching the classic movie, reading the book by Mary Shelley, carving a Frankenstein pumpkin with scars and neck bolts, or practicing your best monster lurch. It’s also Bandana Day, so your monster could also be a pirate, a cowpoke, or just considerately masking up.

Happy Mandrill Family

The Columbus Zoo in Ohio, has welcomed a baby monkey. The new addition brings the zoo’s mandrill troop population to 5. First-time parents Malaika and Mosi, have adjusted well. Malaika is an attentive and protective mom, while Mosi watches over them from a distance. The mandrill troop’s head female, Matilda, gives baby welcoming grins.

The Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Massachusetts, has a couple of rescued beavers rooming together. While Ziibi was out of the room for awhile, Nibi took a bunch of wood, and started damming up the doorway. Perhaps she liked her alone-time so much, that she erected the barricade to keep her beaver roommate out.

Cricket Thermometers

Male crickets chirp to attract females, by rubbing their wings together. But did you know, the sound also tells the temperature? Count how many times a cricket chirps in 14 seconds, then add 40, for an approximate temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. For Celsius, count 25 seconds of chirps, divide by 3, then add 4.

Tiny Village to Combat Homelessness

Salt Lake City Utah’s homeless population, is about to get a lot smaller. The city is going to build 430 tiny homes, to help people get back on their feet. The circular 8-acre village will have shops, gardens, and healthcare offices. Residents would get training and other support, without worrying about where they’ll sleep.

Cats Make You Less Cranky

Today is Black Cat Day. They’re always dressed for Halloween! Black cats have a harder time getting adopted, so consider giving one a home with you! It’s also Cranky Co-Workers Day. Bring them a treat to make them less irritable. If you’re the one who’s always cranky, let everyone know it’s your special day!

Jump Rope Genius

Ryan Alonzo, is nicknamed The Skipman, because he’s a jump rope master. He set a world record, by completing 3,731 consecutive crossovers while skipping. The criss cross record is his second title. He earned his first world record, for doing the most double-under skips in 12 hours. Do you think you could beat him?

A Big Welcome to a Little Orangutan

The Paignton Zoo in England, has a new baby. It’s a critically endangered Bornean orangutan, born on Monday to mother Chinta. Orangutans live in rainforests in the wild, but only around 104,000 of the great apes remain. Chinta and her baby are doing well, and will enjoy some privacy while they settle in.
