Amur Leopard Cubs Are Adorable

The Niabi Zoo in Illinois, has 2 new Amur leopard cubs. The cubs’ mom and dad, Iona and Jillin, are first-time parents, and part of the Species Survival Plan. Fewer than 100 Amur leopards remain in the wild, due to habitat loss in Russia from logging and farming. They are now protected!

Mean Green Pollution-Fighting Machines

Trees do a great job, cleaning our air and giving us oxygen. But did you know, indoor plants can also clear the air? Plants like peace lilies and ferns, are especially good at reducing nitrogen dioxide, a harmful pollutant created by burning fuel. Dirty air won’t have a chance, against a bunch of plants!

Do you know where your ancestors came from? Today is Genealogy Day, so it’s a good time to find out. Make a family tree, and ask your parents or grandparents, to help you fill in as many names as they remember. DNA tests can even show if you’re descended from Neandarthals.

The Girl Scouts were started in 1912. It’s Girl Scout Day, so buy some of their cookies! Carry them in a bumbag, because it’s International Fanny Pack Day! It’s also Plant A Flower Day. Plant some pretty perennials, which are flowers that return every year. If it’s still too cold, start some seeds inside.

That’s a Big Old Tooth!

Some fishermen in Massachusetts, netted an unlikely catch. They pulled up a 7-pound woolly mammoth tooth! The tooth is 11 inches long, and 12,000 years old. The captain of the New England Fishmongers decided to auction the tooth on eBay, and donate the money to World Central Kitchen, to provide food to Ukrainian refugees.

Even the Paint Was Preserved

107 years ago, Ernest Shackleton’s ship went down, in the Weddell Sea. The Antarctic explorer and his crew survived, but the Endurance sank and stayed undiscovered, until now. An expedition found the perfectly-preserved shipwreck 10,000 feet down, after battling blizzards, shifting sea-ice, and sub-zero temperatures. A robotic submersible took pictures, without disturbing the Endurance.

Lunar Time Capsule

Eugene Cernan and Harrison “Jack” Schmitt, were the last aztronauts to walk on the Moon, on the 19 72 Apollo 17 mission. They brought back 14-inch-long tubes, layered with lunar rocks and soil. The last vacuum-sealed tube, has finally been opened. They waited 50 years, knowing there’d be new technology to analyze the samples.

Today is Johnny Appleseed Day, 1 of 2 days celebrating John Chapman. He traveled around the United States, planting orchards of apple trees. He used his tin hat as a pot, and ate out of it! It’s also Worship Of Tools Day, so polish your hammer and charge up your drill. Tools are wonderful things.
