October is a good month to see some meteors! The Draconid meteor showers are whizzing by this week, with a peak on Thursday. Start searching the skies just after sunset, and see them before bedtime! The Orionid meteor showers will be most plentiful on October 21st. Any clear night is good for stargazing!
Today is World Sight Day. You should visit the eye doctor once a year. Seeing clearly is the best, and you might need glasses to see better. If you’re near-sighted, you might not be able to read words on the board at school. Do you have trouble reading up close? You could be farsighted.
Today is Salmon Day. Salmon hatch in shallow freshwater gravel beds, spending their juvenile years in rivers and lakes. They migrate to the ocean as adults, except where they are landlocked. Years later, salmon return to their place of birth to spawn. They sometimes swim 900 miles upstream, using smell to guide the way.
Today is World Octopus Day! Octopuses have 3 hearts, and 8 arms, not tentacles. Tentacles only have suckers at the tips. Octopuses are extremely intelligent, masters of camouflage, and escape artists! Today is also Touch Tag Day. An octopus would be great at water tag! My favorite version is freeze tag. Tag, you’re it!
Have you ever had a peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff sandwich? It’s called a Fluffernutter, and today is Fluffernutter Day! Have one for lunch, but celebrate Pierogie Day for dinner. The delicious dumplings are pockets of dough, often filled with mashed potatoes and cheese, or cabbage, but usually not Fluffernut.
Have you ever had kale chips? It’s a fun way to eat the leafy green vegetable. Kale is also delicious cooked, blended into smoothies, or eaten raw in salads. Happy Kale Day! If that sounds too healthy, you can celebrate Chocolate Covered Pretzel Day instead. I think I’ll eat both of them!
Today is Walk To School Day. Leave early, so you’re not late! It’s also Random Acts Of Poetry Day. Write your own little poem in chalk on the sidewalk, or read your favorite poem to someone! Here’s a poem from 10-year old Declan titled, “Something.”

Today is Bathtub Day, so skip your shower and take a relaxing bubble bath instead! You could also pamper your tub by giving it a good cleaning. It’s also LED Light Day. Light Emitting Diode bulbs are bright and energy efficient. LED holiday lights are the best, because the bulbs don’t fall out!
It’s Pumpkin Seed Day, so it’s the perfect time to practice your pumpkin-carving skills, the roast the seeds. Sprinkle them with salt, or cinnamon and sugar. Your Jack-o’-lantern will be moldy by Halloween, so you’ll have to carve another one later in the month. You’ll get more pumpkin seeds, to try another recipe!
The two oldest men in the world, have the same birthday Joao Marinho Neto, of Brazil, turned 114 on Monday, while Ken Weeks, of Australia, turned 113. The men exchanged birthday greetings by sending photos of each man holding a birthday card for the other one. We wish them both a happy birthday!
