British daredevil Betty Bromage, broke her own record as the oldest wing-walker in the world. The 97-year-old stood on the wing of an airplane as it did a loop-de-loop in the sky. After recovering from a stroke last year, Betty needed a little excitement in her life! She’s wing-walked 6 times since 2016.
Just in time for Okapi Day, the Sacramento Zoo in California welcomed its first okapi calf. The okapi is the only relative to the giraffe, but they live in forests. They have long necks, zebra-striped legs, reddish bodies, and prehensile tongues. Fewer than 10,000 wild okapis remain in their native Democratic Republic of Congo.
A 2-year-old cat in Minnesota holds the new world record, for the longest tail on a domestic cat. The silver Maine coon cat’s name is Mr Pugley Adams, and his tail is 18.5 inches long! He carries his fluffy tail high with pride, and stays away from rocking chairs.
After 46 years of work, China has encircled the entire Taklamakan Desert with trees. The final 100 trees of the Green Great Wall of China, were planted last week. The ring of trees will help contain the shifting sands, and has increased the forest coverage of China, by 25%. Orchards will be planted next.
Today is World Chimpanzee Day. Chimps are not monkeys, but great apes. They are the closest genetic relatives, to humans, and like us, they don’t have tails. Chimpanzees are endangered, primarily due to their habitat loss in the forests and savannahs of Africa. They live in groups, but build their own individual beds each night.
