Chimpanzees in Uganda are endangered, partly due to farming, logging, and fire. Many chimps live in an area called the Albertine Rift, which is also home to half of Africa’s birds, and many other plants and animals. To help preserve their habitat, 3,000,000 trees will be planted, and 700 households will be trained in forest monitoring.

Old Faithful is a geyser at Yellowstone National Park. It erupts with a burst of hot water, reaching up to 184 feet high, approximately every 92 minutes. Old Faithful got its name, because it’s so predictable! 800 years ago, the geyser stopped erupting for decades, due to drought. Scientists believe climate change, could someday stop its eruptions.

David Rush and Jonathan Hannon set their newest world record, slicing apples. To make it trickier, David had to slice the apples, while juggling knives. Jonathan threw apples at David, who successfully sliced 40 apples in half in the air, in one minute. Luckily, he also succeeded in slicing zero fingers off.

A second-grade class in Minnesota, launched a tiny wooden boat in Lake Superior. The message on the bottom said, “I am traveling to the ocean. Please put me back in the water.” 27 years later, Lynn and Mike BeBeau found it stuck in the sand, in Wisconsin. They returned the boat to its ocean-bound journey.

Canada is ready to take the next step, to achieving zero plastic waste by 20 30. In order to protect wildlife and waterways, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create jobs, Canada will ban single-use plastic bags, straws, and utensils next year. They’ll also make improvements, to recover and recycle other plastics.

Have you ever heard of Ada Lovelace? She was one of the first computer programmers. She and Charles Babbage, created an Analytical Engine, in 18 33. Ada’s “Sketch of the Analytical Engine, with Notes from the Translator,” was published in 18 42. 100 years later, it inspired Alan Turing’s work on the first modern computers.
