The Egyptian pyramids have impressed people for 4500 years. How they were built with nearly perfect alignment along the north-south-east-west cardinal points was a mystery. After experimenting, archaeologist Glen Dash believes they might have used a rod called a gnomon to cast shadows on the Autumnal Equinox. We’ll never know for sure!

Michigan Tech University was recently overrun by snowmen! Students and community members broke the world record for building the most snowmen in one hour. 2,228 snowmen were constructed during the “Snowman Left Behind” event. They had to be 3 feet high, use 3 snowballs, and have arms, eyes, and a nose, but it was clothing-optional!

Geologic time is divided into intervals. The largest are eons, followed by eras, periods, and epochs. We are in the Phanerozoic Eon, Cenozoic Era, Quaternary Period, and Holocene Epoch. But geologists may declare that the Anthropocene Epoch began in 1965, when nuclear bomb testing began leaving radioactive geological evidence. Happy New Epoch!

Paddy Johnson, Hec Turner, Henry Quinlan and Max Mossman pedaled 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, but not on bicycles. They used a pedal boat, and set a world record by doing it in only 40 days! Named Pedal the Pond, the 4-man team raised 167,000 pounds for the Charlie Waller mental health charity.

The state of Washington is adding a special feature to its road projects. They are building bridges over the interstate highway so animals can cross safely. Tunnels did not work for animals like elk, so the overpasses will help both wildlife and drivers avoid deadly accidents. What a great way to help animals!
