A big thunderstorm can give everything a powerful wash, but did you know that lightning can also clean the air? Lightning bolts and their surrounding electrical charges, produce nitric oxide, hydroxide, hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl. These oxidants help trap and flush out greenhouse gases. They’re cleaning carbon monoxide and methane from the atmosphere.

Ode to an Orange

Today is Orange Juice Day. Make it special, by squeezing your own juice from fresh oranges. Cut the peels into strips, because it’s also Candied Orange Peel Day. They turn into delicious candy, when simmered in a sugar syrup. While they’re cooking, write a poem, to surprise someone for Poem On Your Pillow Day.

Fantastic Firefighters

Every year, wildfires focus attention on firefighters everywhere. But they’re also working every day, putting out house fires and blocking off traffic accidents. They’re investigating smoke alarms, teaching fire safety to students, and rescuing animals trapped in unusual situations. Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, let’s give a huge thank you to the world’s firefighters!

Massive Mango Meal

2 farmers in Colombia, hold the new world record for the heaviest mango. The enormous fruit weighed in at 9.36 pounds, which is 20 times bigger than the average mango! After taking a mold of the record-breaking fruit, so that they could make a copy of it, they shared a mango feast with their family.

First One in the Pool

A couple in Las Vegas wanted a pool in their backyard, but they received an archaeological treasure instead. When workers were digging the hole, they found 14,000-year-old bones. The fossils probably belonged to a horse or other large Ice Age animal. After the skeleton is excavated, they’ll continue building the pool.

Thank You for Flying SpaceX

Around 3 AM Sunday morning, the Crew Dragon spaceship Resilience, returned its 4-passenger crew back to Earth, after 6 months on the International Space Station. The capsule landed in the Gulf of Mexico, carried by 4 parachutes, in the first night-time splashdown in over 50 years. The mission commander joked that the astronauts had earned 68,000,000 frequent flyer miles.

Imagine a worm, whose body branches out like a tree, and each branch, has a butt at the end. That worm actually exists! The Ramisyllis multicaudata, lives underwater, with its head buried deep in a sea sponge. Sometimes a branch will grow eyes and a brain, and break off to become a new worm.
