In 2013, Bulgarian swimmer Yane Petkov set a world record by swimming 2030 meters in the Indian Ocean. Indian fisherman Gopal Kharvi broke that record 3 months later, swimming 3071 meters. Now, Petkov reclaimed his old record by swimming 3380 meters, but with his hands and feet tied, while fully wrapped in a sack! Beat that, Kharvi!

Russian scientists have discovered roundworms, in soil samples that have been frozen for 40,000 years. But the incredible thing is, the nematodes are alive! The samples were taken from arctic regions of Siberia, and thawed out. Amazingly, the worms from the Pleistocene epoch started to move around. That was one long nap!

Mars is an incredibly dusty place. Dust storms cover the entire planet in a fine red powder. Planetary scientists have finally figured out where all that dust is coming from! The Medusae Fossae Formation is a volcanic deposit 620 miles long, and it’s been eroding for billions of years. There’s lots more dust to come!

Scientists have figured out how to make fossils in a day, instead of millions of years. Using a process called artificial maturation, they compressed samples in sediment using a hydraulic press, then heated them to 410 degrees Fahrenheit. By understanding what molecules withstand fossilization, scientists will know what to look for in real fossils.

Italian scientists have discovered a lake on Mars! However, the liquid is nearly a mile under the southern polar ice cap. Using a radar instrument on the Mars orbiter, the team was able to detect the sub-glacial lake, which measures 12 miles wide. Although the water’s probably extremely salty, it’s possible it contains microbial life!
