Jack Reynolds has discovered the trick to breaking world records: get older! His recent tradition is setting a new record on his birthday, becoming the oldest person to receive their first tattoo, and to ride a non-inversion rollercoaster. Today, on his 106th birthday, he became the oldest person to ride a zip line! Happy Birthday Jacko!

Last week, the audience at Future Con learned all about BB-8. The latest Star Wars films actually use 7 different versions of the lovable droid! From the “Bowling Ball BB-8” who would just get lobbed through the shot, to the “Wiggler” used for close-ups, to the remote-controlled “Red Carpet BB-8”, the robot rolled right into everyone’s hearts!

Derek Woo, a high school senior in Connecticut, invented a way to help save honeybees. Entire colonies can die off when bees ingest insecticides, often by drinking contaminated water that collects on the ends of leaves. Derek found that mixing charcoal into the plants’ soil, makes the water safe! Farmers using biochar will save bees!

Nazca lines are massive drawings in the desert in Peru. The geoglyphs are so huge that you can only properly see the patterns from the air, but they were made 13 to 18 hundred years ago. Now archaeologists have discovered even older geoglyphs nearby! The Paracas and Topara people created giant pictures on hillsides more than 2200 years ago!

Yum-yummy-yum, today is National Caramel Popcorn Day! The salty-sweet treat has been around since the 18-hundreds. It’s National Teflon Day too. If you make your own caramel corn, you’ll be thanking Roy Plunket for inventing Teflon, or polytetraflouroethylene, and Marion Trozzolo for the Happy Pan. Teflon is the non-stick coating that makes cookware easy to clean!

14 year-old Jayera Griffin saved all year for her spring break, but she didn’t travel far. She used her $1000 to pay for a free laundry day at her local laundromat in Riverdale Illinois! Some children she tutors don’t have washing machines, and sometimes can’t afford to do laundry. Jayera is already planning her next free laundry day.

Are you good at Jenga, the game where you pull wooden blocks out of a tower without toppling it? YouTuber Pat McAfee’s dad is a Jenga master. Playing Giant Jenga for the first time, Tim McAfee managed to remove a center block holding up half the tower. The top half dropped neatly onto the stack below. Amazing!

Researchers at MIT are working on a new kind of computer that doesn’t use your hands, voice, or brain waves. It uses subvocalization: the words you say in your head. The AlterEgo headset wraps around your ear and jaw. It activates when you think a command, and answers through your skull. I believe I’ll stick to voice commands!

Jigokudani Monkey Park in Japan is home to hot springs and Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys. The climate is very cold in the winter, and the monkeys soak in the hot water to warm up. But researchers found it also lowered the monkeys’ stress levels, just like humans. A relaxing hot bath works for everyone!
