Today is World Puppetry Day. Sesame Street has some of the most famous puppets, like Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie. Some puppets, called marionettes, are controlled by strings, like Pinocchio. People have been telling stories with puppets, for 4000 years! Use an old sock, to make your own puppet and have a show.

Yesterday marked the start of Eid al-Fitr, and the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. After a month of eating only after dark, millions of Muslims around the world began a 3-day celebration, filled with prayer, visiting relatives, giving gifts to children, and eating lots of sweet foods. Eid Mubarak!

Blizzards Be Gone

Every year since 1971, on the first day of Spring, Michigan’s Lake Superior State University holds a Snowman Burning festival. Their snowman is 10 feet tall, and made of wood and paper. The smoke is meant to ward off blizzards. Have your own Snowman Burning party, by melting a mini-snowman on the stove.

The vernal equinox this morning, marked the moment the Sun crosses the equator, and there are equal hours of day and night. That’s when Spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere, and Autumn starts in the Southern Hemisphere. The days will keep getting longer, until the first day of Summer. Happy Spring!
