The San Diego Zoo Safari, introduced a new baby tamandua. Tamanduas are a type of anteater, and Cora gave birth to her first pup in July. Cora, Fernando, and their daughter, are all doing well. The baby, who doesn’t have a name yet, travels on her mama’s back. Wild tamanduas can eat 9000 ants-per-day!
Lefties, this day is for you! It’s International Left-Handers Day! About 10% of the population is left-handed. To stand out today, make people awkwardly shake hands with their left hands. Ask right-handers to write, or throw a ball with their left hands, for a good laugh.

There’s a new Star in the sky, that wasn’t visible last week. RS Ophiuci is a star 4566 lightyears away, that erupts every 15 years. The eruption, called a nova, makes the star super-bright, as it ejects material into space at 2600 kilometers-per-second! It will fade over the next week or 2.
10-year-old Orion Jean, won a student kindness contest last year. It started him on a new mission. He wants to share the joys of reading with other kids, by collecting book donations. He’s collected 120,000 books so far, to give to kids in Texas. His goal is to gather half a million books!
Last year, Palau was the first country in the world to ban sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. Those chemicals damage the ocean’s coral reefs, and the animals that live there. Thailand announced they’ll also ban sunscreens with harmful chemicals, from marine parks. Protect coral reefs, and use sunscreens that don’t poison the ocean.
Elephants are the largest land mammals in the world. Their skin is an inch thick. They can weigh over 12,000 pounds, and grow 10 feet tall. They eat 300-600 pounds of food a day, with around 220 pounds coming back out as poop. Celebrate these amazing animals, for World Elephant Day!

The night sky is full of meteors, so spend some time after dark, watching the Perseid meteor showers for shooting stars. The night of August 11th will be the peak, as the Earth passes through fields of comet waste. As the debris burns up in our atmosphere, it leaves blazing trails overhead.
