LEGO has been testing recycled plastics, to try and make a brick that is as strong and durable as their existing bricks. After testing hundreds of different formulations of plastic, LEGO finally has a prototype that meets all its requirements. The bricks are created from recycled bottles, and a 1 liter bottle can make 10 bricks.

Today is World Listening Day, the birthday of Raymond Murray Schafer, a composer and environmentalist who founded acoustic ecology. The World Listening Project encourages people to take soundwalks, and observe the sounds around them. Make recordings of birds twittering, subways rumbling underground, waves crashing, or rain falling. Whatever you do today, use your ears.

Today is Mandela Day, in honor of Nelson Mandela. The former President of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize winner, spent his life fighting racial discrimination and segregation, called apartheid. Mandela was South Africa’s first black president, winning the first democratic election after apartheid ended. He was born on this date, 103 years ago.

In the 19 60’s, Princeton University math students Michael Spivak and David Kelly, got obsessed with the number, 17. The prime number, which is a number that can only be divided by itself and 1, is also the sum of the first 4 prime numbers. To celebrate 17, they created Yellow Pig Day, with a 17-toed-and-toothed mascot.
