Yesterday at sundown, Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, began. The Jewish holiday commemorates an ancient miracle in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. A one-day supply of oil lit a menorah, which is a type of candelabra, for 8 days. Hanukkah is celebrated for 8 days by lighting the menorah to prayers, songs, food, gifts and games.

Paper Airplane Letters

Today is Letter Writing Day. Write a letter to someone on nice paper, and pick out a cool stamp at the post office. Use your neatest handwriting, and tell them about things you do every day. It’s also Civil Aviation Day, celebrating the awesomeness of airplanes. Now you can send your letter by airmail.

Today is Cotton Candy Day! Spun sugar has been around since the 15th century. It’s also known as fairy floss, or candy floss. Maybe that’s because confectioner John Wharton and dentist William Morrison, invented the first cotton candy machine. Don’t floss your teeth with cotton candy, or you’ll need to see a dentist!

They created World Trick Shot Day, to inspire people to learn a few tricks of their own. If you don’t have a basketball hoop, you can celebrate with special trash trick shots, into the garbage can.

Sneak Through Soil and Suds

Let’s celebrate earth today. Not the planet Earth, but dirt. It’s World Soil Day! After you play in the dirt, you can celebrate Bathtub Party Day. Make it nice and bubbly! It’s also International Ninja Day. Move silently, and see if you can slip around unseen.

Leave Room for the Animals

Today is World Wildlife Conservation Day. Many species of Earth’s wild animals are endangered, and need special protection. They are hunted by poachers, and their habitats are shrinking and becoming polluted. Organizations like the World Wildlife Fund, use donations to help endangered species. They’ll let you symbolically adopt an animal, and learn all about it.
