A hotel in Australia kept getting security alerts in the middle of the night. Someone was triggering the alarm at the hotel’s liquor store, but the owner never found anyone when he investigated. The security camera finally recorded the prowler. It was a northern quoll. The endangered marsupial usually stays in the trees!

Monarch butterflies make an incredible 3000 mile trip each year. They fly between Canada and Mexico, but their habitat along the way is disappearing. 45 companies have teamed up with landowners, to save butterfly habitat along their migration paths. It can be as simple as leaving wildflowers growing along highways, or planting milkweed in your garden!

Black Lives Matter

The protests against racial inequality and police brutality, are making a difference. Some police officers are standing with protesters, and starting to question fellow officers who use unnecessary violence. Major companies like Bank of America, Apple, Facebook, and Verizon, are donating over $1,000,000,000, to groups who fight for social justice. Good things are always possible.

Yellowstone National Park is no stranger to seismic activity. The park experiences 700 to 3000 earthquakes every year, and is home to a supervolcano. Last Friday, Yellowstone experienced 11 earthquakes in one day! I wonder if it made any bison lose their balance. That would have also made the earth rumble!

Emily Canellos-Simms found an overdue library book, in her mother’s house. The children’s poetry book, called “Days and Deeds”, was due back April 15th, 1955! She paid the fine of 2 cents per day, to the Kewanee Public Library in Illinois. It added up to $345.14! She set a world record for largest library fine ever paid.

Racism Should Upset Everyone

Around the world, people are joining in protests against racism. All people should be treated equally, no matter what color their skin is. Sometimes peaceful protests get dangerous, when racist people interfere with demonstrations. Some people are so angry about discrimination, they break things. It’s another way of making their voices be heard.

Today is Chimborazo Day, celebrating the volcano in Ecuador that is the tallest peak in the world. Sort of. Mount Everest might be the highest above sea level, but Chimborazo is the furthest from the center of the Earth, because our planet is an oblate spheroid: it bulges at the equator!
