Linda Herring has been a foster mom for more than 50 years. When kids need a temporary home because their parents can’t take care of them, foster parents fill in. Linda did that over 600 times! She’s finally retiring, at 75, but 5 of her children and 3 grandchildren have followed her lead, and are also foster parents!
A Canadian company in Nova Scotia, is making lumber out of plastic. Goodwood Plastic Products uses about 80% of the recyclable plastic collected in Halifax, and turns it into building blocks. They can be drilled and nailed just like wood, but don’t deteriorate. Goodwood is creative. They also made a parking lot from recycled plastics!
Today is National Nothing Day. Since that was so boring, people created other things to celebrate besides nothing. It’s also Fig Newton Day, International Hot And Spicy Food Day, and Appreciate A Dragon Day. If you want to pretend you’re a dragon, eat a Carolina Reaper pepper! Your throat will be on fire!
Loads of people were late for work last week in Scotland, when their commuter train was delayed. Some cows had escaped from the nearby Pollok Country Park, and one decided to stand in the middle of the train tracks for about an hour. The cow was finally lured away with a bucket of food.
South Luangwa National Park, in Zambia, is home to many elephants. One elephant decided the food in the safari lodge looked pretty good, so he climbed right over the 5-foot wall! He took some mangoes, then climbed back out. Guests were amused to watch the big elephant making himself right at home!
Nik Wallenda is known as the King of the Wire. He has walked on tightropes across Times Square in New York, a gorge near the Grand Canyon, and Niagara Falls. Nik is planning his highest walk ever in March, over an active volcano! He’ll use a gas mask to breathe, because of sulfuric gases.
Scientists in California were experimenting with different types of bacteria. One grew in clumps, while another expanded to fill a petri dish. But when they combined them, the bacteria worked together to create beautiful patterns, that looked like flowers. Now, while studying the interaction of bacterial colonies, scientists can also make art!

Vernon Kruger is experiencing the ultimate in tiny-house living. He just spent his 60th day, living in a barrel on top of a pole in South Africa. He wants to beat the world record, which is 67 days, by at least a week. His biggest concern is getting hit by lightning!
A dog in Texas got so excited about pumpkin pie, that he ate the fork! Carli Ott was sharing a piece of pie with her pooch, Chemo. He swallowed the fork, right out of her hand. Chemo had to have surgery to remove the fork, but is making a full recovery.
