The idea was such a success, that Marissa is now a high school senior, talk show guest, patented inventor, and business owner!

Sensors warn the user of obstacles with vibrations, while speakers announce nearby shops and restaurants, or which bus is arriving. What a fantastic tool for the visually impaired!

Mexican scientist Sandra Pascoe Ortiz, has developed a biodegradable plastic made from cactus leaves! It can degrade in water in only a few days. Since cacti can grow in harsh conditions, the eco-friendly plastic can be produced using fewer natural resources. The cactus plastic is even edible, although it doesn’t taste very good!

Macadamia trees are evergreens native to Australia, that produce nuts. The shells are so hard to open, that the only Australian animals who can get into them are cockatoos! It can repair decayed areas on teeth, and grow a protective layer, so cavities never form. It’s still in testing though, so keep brushing and flossing your teeth!

Residents of Canada’s British Columbia were so determined to protect the surrounding wilderness, that they raised money to buy it themselves. BC Parks Foundation organized a crowdfunding campaign, which raised $3,000,000. They’ll buy 2000 acres of the Princess Louisa Inlet to convert into a Provincial Park, and protect the pristine land from logging and development forever!
