Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen, Little Corals

The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest coral reef in the world, and it’s not doing so well. Rising ocean temperatures are the biggest threat to coral reefs. The Australian Institute of Marine Biology thinks sunscreen may be the answer! They’re testing a thin floating shield of calcium carbonate which will protect the coral from bleaching!

Belize Ends Offshore Drilling

The Central American country of Belize is ending all offshore oil drilling. Its waters are home to the Belize Barrier Reef, part of the longest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere. Belizeans have fought hard to save the reef. The ban on oil extraction is a promising step to protect the environment.
