To celebrate the Spring Festival, Nauryz, today in Almaty Kazakhstan, quilters are beginning what they hope will become the world’s largest patchwork quilt. The 25,500 square meter quilt will represent the diverse nature and people of Kazakhstan. The city is also serving a big cup of tea to 20,000 people. The cup holds 2000 liters!

A fossilized skull of a Siberian Unicorn was found in Kazakhstan! Earlier fossils were 350,000 years old, but this unicorn lived only 29,000 years ago. The Siberian unicorn, or Elasmotherium sibiricum looked like a 6 foot tall rhino with shaggy fur like a woolly mammoth and a long, slender horn coming out of its head.

Will you be traveling over the holidays? So are the astronauts who blasted off yesterday! The Soyuz capsule launched from Kazakhstan carrying Anton Shkaplerov from Russia, Norishige Kanai from Japan and Scott Tingle from the United States. They are headed for the International Space Station orbiting 240 miles above Earth.
