A Map That’s Out of This World!

The European Space Agency’s Gaia mission has a huge goal: mapping all the stars in our galaxy. The map pinpoints the location and brightness of 1.7 billion stars in the Milky Way. It also shows asteroids, interstellar dust, and the color and density of stars. The Gaia spacecraft is still adding to the incredible 3D map!

Centaurus A’s Groupies

Researchers studying the Centaurus A galaxy found that dwarf galaxies are orbiting it on a plane instead of hanging around it like bees around a hive. The Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies are also orbited by dwarf galaxies on a plane, but it was believed they were unusual exceptions. Apparently not!

Can You Really See a Black Hole?

We may soon see a black hole for the first time! Last April, the Event Horizon Telescope was aimed at Sagittarius A* in the center of our Milky Way Galaxy where astrophysicists believe a supermassive black hole is located. Hopefully, data analysis will now provide an image of a black hole!
