Today is Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The ozone layer is the region of Earth’s stratosphere that protects us from the Sun’s radiation, and chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, had formed a hole in it. CFCs were banned decades ago, but the molecules can take 100 years to leave the atmosphere.

In the United States, today is Voter Registration Day. Kids who will be 18 by November 8th, can register now, to vote in the next election. Ask your parents, if they are registered to vote. They can register, check their registration status, or request absentee ballots, at vote.org. They’re voting for your future!

Today is Cinnamon Raisin Bread Day, so begin your day with a slice of tasty fruit-filled toast. Keep the sweetness going, with some chocolate-hazelnut spread on top, since it’s also Choose Your Chocolate Day. I’m sure you won’t mind having to sample all the different kinds of chocolate, to make the best choice.

If you play sports, you get plenty of physical activity during practice. But exercise is good for everyone, so make it a part of your daily routine. Today is Teenager Workout Day, to help teens focus on healthy habits to take them into adulthood. In between sleeping late and video games, get some exercise.

Today is Play-Doh Day! The squishy dough started out as a wallpaper cleaner, but Joe McVicker made a colorful version for kids in 1956. It’s Guacamole Day also. Smash up an avocado with some salt for the easiest guacamole ever! Then go outside and find some cool rocks, since it’s Collect Rocks Day!

An ice-skating champion from Hungary, expanded on her talents, to set a world record. Eszter Szombathelyi skated onto the ice with a jump rope, and completed 136 speedy skips. She hopes her record for the most rope skips on ice skates in one minute, will inspire others to create more acrobatic skating elements.

Scientists at Cornell University, wanted to see if a mushroom’s fungal filaments, called mycelia, could carry electrical impulses to a circuit board, that controlled a robotic starfish. The experiment was a success! The mycelia sensed changes in light and their environment, which affected the robot’s movements. Mushrooms could be used in biohybrid robotic systems.

Today is Greenpeace Day. The organization was started in 1971, when activists tried to stop nuclear testing off the shores of Alaska. Ever since, the group has been fighting to save the Arctic, whales, and the environment. They’ve raised awareness about the damage being done to the Earth, but it’s everyone’s job to protect it!

Today is World Afro Day. If you have hair that grows into an afro, show off your beautiful, natural hair! It’s also Felt Hat Day, as well as Make A Hat Day. Crochet a hat, or fold one out of newspaper. Today, everyone gets a chance, to show off what’s on top of their head.
