Today is Social Media Day, but most social networking isn’t meant for younger kids. There are safe ways for kids to connect online, like Azoomee, GeckoLife, and Cocoon. No matter what age, everyone should remember not to share personal information online, and never post anything, you wouldn’t be comfortable with the whole world seeing.

Mark Lewis is known for making sand sculptures, on the beach in England. He likes to carve everyday objects, like a bathtub drain and plug, or a tube of toothpaste. He even carved a giant pair of Crocs, that people could step into. Mark honed his skills by taking a sand-sculpture class.

People from 4 states reported seeing a fireball whizzing across the sky on Thursday. The object was a bolide, a type of large, bright meteor, that creates a sonic boom as it falls. Homeowners in Georgia got the closest look at the meteor, since it ended its streak falling through their roof!

Today is Log Cabin Day. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book, Little House in the Big Woods, described how Laura’s father cut trees, and built their log house. You can build a miniature one of your own! If cutting wood is too much work, just celebrate the day by building with Lincoln Logs. It’s much easier!

Today is International Mud Day! A lot of animals roll in mud to cool off, and some people put mud on their faces to help their skin. Sometimes it’s just fun to play in the mud! If you can’t find any mud, grab a hose, spray it on some dirt, and make your own!

Waffles are a great invention. They’re like pancakes, but designed to hold pools of syrup! Today is Waffle Iron Day, so I’m going to use my Darth Vader and Hello Kitty irons to make fun waffles! It’s also Camera Day. Learn all the special features on your camera, and take lots of pictures!

Today is Paul Bunyan Day, named for the giant North American lumberjack. His big blue ox was named Babe. Legend says Paul Bunyan sawed the legs off his parents’ bed when he was 7 months old. He formed the Great Lakes as watering holes for Babe, and made the Grand Canyon by dragging his axe.

Today is Happy Heart Hugs Day. It was created for anyone who “fills your heart with happy, that’s not close enough for regular-type hugs.” They’re the perfect socially-distanced hug. It’s also Tapioca Day. Tapioca is a starch made from the cassava plant. They’re the beads that look like frog eggs, in tapioca pudding.

In 19 28, Peyo was born. He created the Smurfs, the tiny blue creatures who live in mushroom-shaped houses. Smurf boys start growing beards in their 400’s. They live to nearly 1000 years old, but Grandpa Smurf is in his thousands! Today is Global Smurfs Day, so wear blue, and sing a happy song!

Today is Great American Picnic Day. Pack a cooler with food, and head outdoors to enjoy the last Saturday in June! If you want to also celebrate Great American Campout Day, bring your tents and sleeping bags too. Many parks hold special activities for campers, but you can also camp in your own backyard.
