An Asteroid Wiped Out the Dinosaurs

Scientists have long believed, that a meteor impact on Earth led to the extinction of dinosaurs. Researchers finally found evidence, in the Chicxulub impact crater in Mexico. Rock from deep within the crater, matches the chemical signature, of the dust which blanketed the planet. The asteroid impact, caused dust to blot out the sun.

Lifting Up Soles

12-year-old Lindsey Sobel needed to do an act of repairing the world, before her Bat Mitzvah, which is a Jewish coming of age ceremony. She started a program called Shoes for Soles, which has collected over 30,000 pairs of shoes, to distribute to homeless people. A fresh pair of shoes, can brighten someone’s day.

Birthday Ripoff

Tomorrow will be a sad day for people born on February 29th. Today is February 28th, but tomorrow is March 1st. Their birthdate only comes every 4 years! It takes the Earth 365 1/4 days to orbit the sun, so every 4 years, those quarters add together, for a 366-day leap year. Happy birthday anyway, leaplings!

In the Right Place At the Right Time

Alan Miles happened to photograph one of the rarest mammals in North America. He saw a Sierra Nevada red fox, in Central Oregon. Only about 50 of them still exist in the wild. Contrary to their name, many Sierra Nevada red foxes actually have dark fur. This one was nearly black, with a white-tipped tail.

Survivor in Space

Hayley Arcenaux battled bone cancer when she was 10, and later became a physician’s assistant, at the same hospital that treated her. Hayley will become the youngest person launched into space. The 29-year-old was selected by St Jude’s Hospital, to ride on SpaceX’s first all-civilian spaceflight in 20 21, showing survivors not even the sky’s the limit.

My, What Big Paws You Have!

It’s International Polar Bear Day! Polar bears have black skin, and transparent hollow hairs that scatter light, making their fur look white! They can grow 9 feet tall, and have paws one foot wide. Polar bears live in Arctic sea ice regions, so climate change and melting ice, has caused them to become endangered.

Sliced Strawberries

Today is World Sword Swallower’s Day. There aren’t too many places to watch sword swallowing, and we certainly don’t want you to try it, but it sure sounds cool! Try strawberries instead, since it’s also Strawberry Day! A sword swallower could slice the strawberries as they eat them, but you should chew them instead.
