Neutron stars are the collapsed cores of massive stars, at least 10 times bigger than the Sun. Magnetars are a very rare type of neutron star. Astronomers may have identified a 25th magnetar, with a magnetic field 1000 times stronger than a neutron star, and a quadrillion times more powerful than Earth’s!

Corgi Cuties

Today is Corgi Day. The little dog with the short legs, is Queen Elizabeth’s favorite. She’s had more than 30 corgis during her 95 years. Do you remember the Million Corg March? Hundreds of adorable short-legged corgis wandered around Washington DC dressed in costumes, from coffee cups to crowns. I hope they have another one.

Roll out of bed, for Doughnut Day! Some stores, like Krispy Kreme and Duck Donuts are giving away free doughnuts, while other places like Dunkin’, will give you a doughnut if you buy a drink. Check your favorite doughnut shop for deals. Don’t forget, Krispy Kreme gives vaccinated customers a free doughnut every day!

The Australian airline Qantas, stores a fleet of aircraft in California’s Mojave Desert. The area is home to venomous rattlesnakes that like to curl up in the wheels, so a wheel whacker is part of each plane’s engineering kit. It’s basically a broom handle, used to scare snakes and scorpions out of the wheels.

Prehistoric Shark Population Never Recovered

Scientists recently discovered, that there used to be way more sharks on Earth 19,000,000 years ago. There were 10 times more sharks in the ocean than there are today, but they suddenly disappeared. It’s not clear what wiped out nearly 90% of all sharks, but it’s even more reason, to protect the sharks we still have left.

Today is Chimborazo Day, celebrating the volcano in Ecuador that is the tallest peak in the world. Sort of. Mount Everest might be the highest above sea level, but Chimborazo is the furthest from the center of the Earth, because our planet is an oblate spheroid: it bulges at the equator!
