Charcoal ice cream with pomegranate swirl represents the underworld and Persephone from Greek mythology. Stonehenge inspired a vanilla flavor with honey, oats and hazelnuts. Now I’m hungry!

Today is National Cellophane Tape Day. Artist Mark Jenkins makes sculptures out of tape, and teaches you how on the website TapeSculpture.org. It’s also National Grape Popsicle Day. 11 year-old Frank Epperson invented them in 1905, when he left a stick in his grape soda and it froze. Popsicles were originally called Eppsicles!

In hopes of “Celebrating York’s Unity Through 10,000 Acts of Kindness,” they want to fill 1000 tables over a mile and a half long, and break the world record!

Solar powered robots are starting to help farmers by getting rid of weeds. The current method to kill weeds is to spray the entire crop with herbicidal chemicals. The robots use cameras to identify weeds, then spray herbicide directly onto them. It uses 20 times less chemicals, and keeps it off the food we eat!

But volcanologists are getting the chance of a lifetime to study the volcano, its lava flow patterns, and how to make better predictions about future eruptions. Scientists can learn a tremendous amount by taking core samples of ice, like pushing a straw into a layer cake and examining the layers in the tube. In Antarctica, scientists found an area of unbroken ice over 1,000,000 years old! The core sample will provide an amazing record of Earth’s climate, air quality, and even diseases.

A year ago, Jake the dog disappeared from his home in Arizona. But Adam Herbaugh found the coonhound wandering the streets in Pennsylvania, and located Jake’s owners because he was microchipped. The animal rescue group, A Darrah Bull Bully Rescue, organized a relay to return him. 20 volunteers drove him 100 miles each, until he was home again!

Paleontologists believe an asteroid strike in Chicxulub Mexico 66 million years ago may have wiped out 3/4 of all species on Earth, including most non-avian dinosaurs. Vertebrate paleontologist Daniel Field believes most birds also did not survive because of forest fires. The exception was ground-dwelling birds. They moved into trees once the forests recovered, and evolved into today’s birds!
