Pampers has a new way to tell, if a baby needs a new nappy. Lumi is a smart sensor that attaches to diapers. The system uses a night vision camera, temperature and humidity monitors, and sleep trackers. It sends notifications, so parents get a message every time the baby poops! That’s a high-tech baby!

Trees do an important job, cleaning the air. But how do you plant trees in the city? London is fighting pollution by placing towers of moss on sidewalks. The carbon-filtering structures are called City Trees, because each one can clean as much air as 275 trees! They even store moisture, helping to cool the air.

17-year-old Wolf Cukier spent the past summer, working as an intern at NASA. On his 3rd day, he discovered a planet orbiting 2 stars! He was working with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, also known as TESS. The Planet Hunters TESS Explore Project, on zooniverse.org, lets anyone search the data, to help identify new planets.

Brothers Mike and Nick Fiorito started an organization, called Blankets of Hope, which distributes blankets to homeless shelters. When Nick’s old 5th grade teacher learned what her former student was doing, she asked how students could help. Now, with help from schools across North America, 20,000 blankets have been delivered, with letters from students attached.

A radio tower in Texas, is a favorite roosting spot for hundreds of vultures. The tower, which belongs to Customs and Border Protection, is covered with vulture poop and vomit. Yuck! The birds might create problems for employees, but they’re protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The tower belongs to the vultures now!

Over a year ago, a hum traveled around the world. People couldn’t hear it, but the vibrations created a seismic signal. It turned out to be a new underwater volcano forming! The submarine volcano was born in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and Mozambique. It’s now 3 miles long, and a half mile high!

Point Nemo is the spot in the ocean, that’s farthest away from land. Hardly any organic life exists there. The closest humans to it, are usually the astronauts at the International Space Station! Labeled the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, it’s 1670 miles from the nearest inhabited place. The space station is only 258 miles away!

If you have a garbage disposal in your kitchen sink, food scraps get ground up and washed into the sewer pipes. If you install a Sepura bin under your sink, food scraps get collected for composting instead! Once the odor-free container is full, you empty it into your compost pile, to become nutrient-rich soil.

Today is Marzipan Day. Marzipan is made using almond meal, and sugar or honey. The paste can be rolled out to cover cakes, or formed into sweet edible sculptures, like tiny animals or fruits, realistically painted with food coloring. I’d like to make all the planets. You could make a pan of marzipan Marzes!
