Jesus Got Some Visitors

The 12 days of Christmas have ended, and today is the Epiphany, or Three Kings Day. You could celebrate with king’s cake, a crown-shaped cake with candied fruit for jewels, and a baby Jesus doll inside. It’s also the day many people remove holiday decorations, known as Take The Christmas Tree Down Day.

Hug An Apple Tree

Today is Apple Tree Day, which started as a celebration of a nearly 200 year-old tree. When you think about it, it’s pretty amazing that food just grows on trees. It’s also Shortbread Day, so start baking! You only need flour, sugar, and butter, to bake this delicious Scottish dessert.

Beans Beans, The Musical Fruit

Today is Bean Day, and also Technology Day. To celebrate, make a big bowl of 15-bean soup. Then use computer technology to find “Vegetable Soup”, a great kids’ television show, on YouTube. Instead of watching it at 6:00 Saturday morning like kids in the 19 70’s, you can enjoy it with your bean soup lunch!

We Changed Your Oil Into a Rabbit

Auto mechanics in Florida got to be magicians yesterday. But instead of pulling a rabbit out of a hat, they pulled one out of an engine compartment. They heard scratching sounds while they were doing an oil change, and found a bunny trapped near the motor mount. The rabbit was safely released outside.

Be Careful, This Bird Bites

A newly-found fossil in China, is basically a bird, with a dinosaur head. The Cratonavis zhui lived during the Cretaceous period 120,000,000 years ago, and its body was similar to modern birds. Its head, however, looked more like a Tyrannosaurus rex. It’s a fascinating look, at the evolution of birds.

Discovering the Possibilities in Peanuts

George Washington Carver was an African-American scientist, inventor, and educator, that was born into slavery, during the Civil War. He taught farmers how to rotate crops for better soil, and found hundreds of uses for peanuts and sweet potatoes, including lotions, plastics, and even gasoline. Celebrate Carver Day, with your own peanut invention.

Today is Bird Day. There are around 18,000 different bird species! The largest non-flying bird is the ostrich, the kori bustard is the heaviest bird that can fly, and the wandering albatross has the largest wingspan, at up to 11 feet! The bee hummingbird is smallest at 2 1/4 inches long. The Australian lyrebird sounds like R2-D2!

Shake It Up and Whip It Good

Pie and hot chocolate are even better, with a tower of whipped cream sprayed on top! For Whipped Cream Day, try making your own. Simply put some heavy whipping cream in a jar, and shake it for a few minutes! Just don’t shake it too long, or it will turn into butter.

Happy Cute Year

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, in China, welcomed 15 panda cubs last year. 13 of them made their first appearance in public, to wish everyone a happy and fun New Year. They frolicked on their colorful playground, in between bottle-feedings with their keepers. They’re so cute and roly-poly!

Will you notice Earth’s big moment this morning? It reaches its perihelion, which is the closest it gets to the Sun each year. The distance at that point is 91,403,034 miles, measured from the center of the Earth to the center of the Sun. The farthest distance is called aphelion, occurring on July 6th.
