This Pumpkin Weighs a Ton

The Alaska State Fair announced a new state record, for heaviest pumpkin. The gargantuan gourd, named Cookie Monster, weighed 2,051 pounds. Dale Marshall planted the seed on June 4th, and said the pumpkin may have grown bigger if the summer had been sunnier. The world record is held by a 2,702-pound pumpkin.

H2O, Minus the O

Hydrogen fuel can be a source of clean green energy, but scientists are working on a way to produce it cheaply, and without using fossil fuels. They may have a solution. By using aluminum nanoparticles to remove oxygen from water molecules, they’re left with hydrogen gas. It’s the next step to a cleaner Earth.

Madame CJ Walker Gets Her Own Barbie

Madame C J Walker was the first female self-made millionaire. She started a haircare and cosmetics business for Black women, and became a well-known philanthropist and activist. Now, she’s the latest woman to get a Barbie doll in her likeness. Their Inspiring Women series also includes people like Ida B Wells and Jane Goodall.

Give Some Extra Help

Today is Willing To Lend A Hand Wednesday. Offer to help your teacher with something at school, or grab a broom and sweep the kitchen floor. Can you help your little brother or sister tie their shoes, scoop the litter box, or hold the door open for a stranger? Thanks for lending a hand!

Perfect Outdoor Snack

Today is Trail Mix Day. That means you can take the last of all your bags of pretzels, peanuts, chocolate chips, pumpkin seeds, raisins, and whatever else you like, and mix them together. Then go for a long hike and eat your snack for energy, because it’s Eat Outside Day. Don’t worry about crumbs.

Goat Shenanigans

A deputy from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama, was delivering documents to a house. He returned to his patrol car, to find a pair of mischievous goats causing trouble. One goat was eating paperwork inside the vehicle, while another had climbed onto the roof. Deputy Thrower shooed them away without any arrests.

Artemis Launch Postponed

Yesterday should have been the first flight of NASA’s newest mission to the Moon, called Artemis 1. The launch had to be postponed because of a hydrogen leak in an engine. The next possible launch date is Friday. The Artemis program will land humans on the Moon again, for the first time since 19 72.

Great Big Fish, Itty Bitty Teeth

International Whale Shark Day celebrates the biggest fish in the world. It’s not a whale, but it’s nearly as big! Whale sharks can reach 41 feet long. They eat tiny plankton, and have to travel great distances in tropical waters, to find enough to feed their giant bodies. Their teeth are only 6 millimeters long!

Slink Down to the Beach

Summer’s nearly over, but there’s still time to celebrate Beach Day. While you’re there, pick up any garbage you see, and be sure you don’t leave any new trash of your own. It’s also Slinky Day. The talented spring was invented in the 19 40’s, and has been walking down stairs ever since.
