Jesse Rood is a firefighter, who set a world record with an axe. Firefighters usually use axes to smash windows and doors open, or to chop ventilation holes in the roof. But Jesse’s specialty is axe throwing. His official record-breaking throw, hit a target 90 feet away, although he’s reached 120 feet in practice.

Anybody Home?

Knock-knock. Who’s there? Mr Bear. Actually, the bear rang a doorbell at 3:30 in the morning, at a home in South Carolina. Wendy Watson’s doorbell camera captured video of the hairy visitor, who also left a nose-print on the window. Then the bear ambled away, and ate seeds from the bird feeder.

The Beautiful Game

Today is Soccer Day. Although it’s called football in much of the world, it’s the most popular sport on Earth. Some kids make balls out of old plastic bags, and draw goal posts in the dirt. After you celebrate Soccer Day by kicking a ball around, celebrate Refreshment Day with a cold drink.

Have you heard of Earth Overshoot Day? It’s the point in the year, when humans have used more of Earth’s natural resources, than the Earth can produce in a year. We’ve already reached that point in the year, and there’s still 5 months to go. Think about ways to make Earth’s resources last longer!

Keep Nature Trash-Free

It’s World Nature Conservation Day. Start your morning with a nature walk outdoors. Don’t forget a bag, to pick up any trash you find. Reward yourself with a candy bar, since it’s Milk Chocolate Day! It’s also Waterpark Day. Time to slip down some water slides, or plunge into a wave pool!

New Babies for Orangutan Family

The Dudley Zoo in England, has welcomed 2 new Bornean orangutan babies recently. 30-year-old Jazz had a baby 4 weeks ago, named Jim. Her daughter, 11-year-old Sprout, just had her own little boy. It’s Sprout’s first baby, so grandma Jazz is giving her a helping hand, and nursing both babies.

Are You Sure This Is Right?

Hollister California residents were left a little confused, after some recent roadwork. Contractors were supposed to paint slightly curved yellow and white lines, on the newly-paved road. Instead, the road markings were zig-zags. Somebody misunderstood the directions! The road will be repainted, so people will have to enjoy the wild ride before it’s gone.

The Beautiful Sound of Bagpipes

Today is Bagpipe Appreciation Day. Listen to some lovely bagpipe music, and make sure it’s loud enough for everyone to hear! You can even make your own, out of a garbage bag and recorders. Dragon-Roasted Cream

Today is Gary Gygax Day. He created the role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons, in 1974. Get a group of wizards and barbarians together, and learn to play D & D. You’ll need same snacks, so how about popcorn and crème brûlée, also known as burnt cream. Since it’s Crème Brûlée Day, enjoy a caramelized custard cup.
