Fans of Dr Who, a tv show that started in 1963, know all about the Daleks. Today is Dalek Remembrance Day. Pretend you’re a Dalek, by moving slowly and chanting, “Exterminate! Exterminate!” When you’re finished terrifying everyone, celebrate the ancient festival of Yule, by having a bonfire with a Yule log, and feeding the trees.

Winter Is Officially Here

Today is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in Earth’s Northern Hemisphere. The sun’s maximum elevation will be at its lowest, meaning the period of darkness is longest. Starting tomorrow, the days will gradually get longer. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the summer solstice!

House Chicken Leads a Pampered Life

Marsi Parker Darwin has been rescuing chickens for years, but one chicken, named Peanut, was extra-special. She couldn’t even hatch on her own, so Marsi peeled her out of the egg. Now, at age 20, Peanut may be the world’s oldest chicken. She enjoys hanging out in the house, and sitting on Marsi’s lap.

Something Smells Delicious

Does anyone want some grilled onions? Firefighters in Florida, were called to extinguish a blazing trailer, filled with 6,000 pounds of onions. The truck hauling the trailer had blown a tire, creating sparks and causing the fire. No one was injured, but all those onions might have caused some crying.

A Star Is Born

The James Webb Space Telescope was launched nearly one year ago, and has helped us see some amazing things. In one image, scientists spotted a new star forming. Usually, early evidence of star formation is hidden behind clouds of gas and dust, but the Webb’s infrared capabilities, can see right through them.

Guided By a Teenager

Today is Sacagawea Day. She was the daughter of a Native American Shoshone chief, who joined Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery Expedition in 18-oh-5, to map a passage across the United States. 16-year-old Sacagawea taught them which plants were edible or medicinal, acted as a translator, and helped them cross the Rocky Mountains.
