New Giraffe Standing Tall

A zoo in Wisconsin, announced a new baby reticulated giraffe, born to mother, Marlee, and father, Bahatika. The calf weighed 164 pounds at her first check-up, and is doing well. Although the calf is not named yet, she’s strong and spunky. Giraffe calves are 6-feet tall at birth, and stand up within an hour.

Whiz Along On Two Wheels

The United Nations declared that June 3rd, is World Bicycle Day. Riding a bicycle is healthy exercise, a clean mode of transportation, and fun! The first bicycle, invented by Karl von Drais in 18 17, was called a swiftwalker or velocipede. It didn’t even have pedals! Whenever you cycle, wear your helmet for safety.

Today is Chimborazo Day, celebrating the volcano in Ecuador that is the tallest peak in the world. Sort of. Mount Everest might be the highest above sea level, but Chimborazo is the furthest from the center of the Earth, because our planet is an oblate spheroid. It bulges at the equator!

Gigantic Jersey Covers Half the Field

Is there a giant cricket player on the planet? The Indian Premier League has a shirt for them. The sports club created the world’s largest cricket jersey, in honor of the league’s 15th anniversary. The jersey is 216 feet long, and has the logos from all 10 cricket teams printed on it.

Have you ever seen how much pee, a disposable diaper can hold? A special gel inside, traps the liquid. Scientists have developed a gel that can pull water out of the air, even in the driest desert. It could capture drinking water, for people living in drought-stricken areas with water shortages.

Planets Gather for a Group Shot

All the planets we can see with the naked eye, are lining up in the sky. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, are arranged from left to right, in order of their distance from the Sun. They’ll be visible along the horizon the whole month of June, before sunrise. Mars is the reddish one.
