Smile At Nature’s Wonders

Today, celebrate everyone’s not-so-secret power. It’s Smile Power Day! See how easy it is to make other people feel better, just by giving them a big smile! It’s also Nature Photography Day. Head outside with your camera or phone, and focus on a blade of grass, the moon, or that cheeky squirrel!

Cool as a Cucumber

Cucumber Day is a great time to enjoy a crisp, cool, crunchy cucumber. Enjoy a little one right off a vine, or cut a big cuke into cubes, and make a cucumber feta salad, to also celebrate Feta Day. The salty, crumbly cheese, is made from sheep’s or goat’s milk, instead of cow’s.

Measure Your Body’s Volume

Over 2200 years ago, the Greek mathematician, Archimedes, discovered that an object’s volume could be measured by submerging it in water. He had this revelation while taking a bath, so we celebrate International Bath Day. Today is also National Pop Goes The Weasel Day. Learn the words, and find a jack-in-the-box to play along with you.

A Flag You Can Eat

In the United States, June 14th is Flag Day. The distinctive Stars and Stripes represent the 50 states, and the 13 original colonies. What other countries have flags of red, white, and blue? Make a dessert flag for Strawberry Shortcake Day by adding blueberries to the red and white strawberries and whipped cream.

Kid, Kid, Hooray!

Hey kids, tell your parents it’s Children’s Day! They’ll probably tell you, every day is children’s day, but maybe you can convince them to give you a special treat anyway. How about some candy? June is National Candy Month, because there’s too many kinds of candy to try, in just one day.

Daredevil Dragonflies

Did you know dragonflies, can fly upside-down and backwards? Dragonflies are known as a sentinel species, because they’re a good indicator of the health of wetlands. They lay their eggs in water, where the larvae can live for 6 years before becoming adult dragonflies, so they’re sensitive to pollution and drought. Happy Dragonfly Day!

You Have a Knack for Knitting

Do you need new socks? Don’t go shopping. You can knit your own, to celebrate Worldwide Knit In Public Day. Start with big knitting needles and chunky yarn, and follow the steps on a learn-to-knit video. You can also try finger-knitting, if you don’t have needles. Proudly display those knitting skills!

Make Sure You Pull Out the Right Plants

Today is Weed Your Garden Day. Make sure your vegetables aren’t getting buried in unwanted plants, and that your flowers have room to thrive. If you didn’t plant anything this spring, don’t worry. The weeds can be your garden! Dandelions, plantain, wood sorrel, chickweed, and many other weeds, are actually edible. Pick a salad.

How’s Your Aim?

Today is World Softball Day. Organize a game and practice your fastpitch. If you want to work on your aim alone, you’re in luck. It’s also International Axe Throwing Day. Use a toy axe please! You can also look for a local axe-throwing club, to safely practice your strength, technique, and accuracy.
