Today is West Virginia Day. When Virginia seceded from the Union during the time of the Civil War, the western part refused to join the Confederates, and formed the 35th state of West Virginia instead. Okay, you learned something. Now you’re excused, to enjoy Goof Off Day. Have fun!

Today is World Water Day, organized by the United Nations. This year’s theme is Valuing Water. How is water important to you? Find out where your neighborhood’s water comes from. Hundreds of millions of people around the world, don’t have access to clean water. Freshwater sources can easily get contaminated, in any community.

Don’t Ever Foul Ava

A seventh-grader in Ohio, officially set a new world record. 13-year-old Ava Pietras sank 52 free throws with a basketball, in 1 minute, breaking the women’s record by 12 shots. She was inspired by her basketball trainer, Anthony Miracola, who had broken the men’s record earlier, with 67 free throws. They make a great team!

Finders Keepers

Almar Creighton and her dog Lucy, were at a South African beach, when Lucy’s ball was stolen. Lucy dropped her tennis ball in a tide pool. Before the border collie could retrieve it, an octopus grabbed it, and disappeared under a rock. Lucy waited patiently, but the octopus wouldn’t give up its new toy.

How Many Seconds Until Tomorrow?

3. 2. 1. It’s Countdown Day! You can count down the days to almost anything, like the years until your 100th birthday, the days until summer vacation, or the minutes until dinner. If you want to countdown to a blastoff, watch SpaceX launch its Falcon 9 rocket, carrying 60 Starlink satellites, on Monday evening.

Remember the Smells of the Forest

Today is the International Day of Forests. Find a secluded spot in the woods, then lie on your back and look up at the trees. Listen to the birds, and smell the aroma of the leaves, because it’s Fragrance Day. It’s also Memory Day, so don’t forget your way back out of the forest!

Today is World Poetry Day, so I wrote a haiku poem. It has 3 lines, containing 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and 5 syllables. It’s also French Bread Day, and Common Courtesy Day. Use your manners, when you eat all the delicious bread!

Let’s Print a New School

A 15-year-old in Madagascar, is helping more kids get an education around the world. Maggie Grout formed an organization called Thinking Huts, to raise money for 3-D printed, solar-powered schoolhouses. The outer surfaces can be used for vertical farming or rock-climbing walls. The first school will cost $20,000. They’ll get cheaper as more are built.

Icelandic Lava Lamp

Yesterday evening, a volcano erupted in Iceland. There were no injuries, and people loved watching the flow of lava, glowing in the night. It’s been 800 years since the last eruption in southwestern Iceland, although they’ve recently experienced thousands of earthquakes. Iceland straddles 2 tectonic plates, so you can see where Europe and North America meet.

Quilt With Kindness

Won’t You Be My Neighbor Day, honors the legendary Mr Rogers. His television show taught kids and adults alike, about kindness and patience. Wear a cardigan, be kind to everyone, and watch Mr Rogers wrapped in your favorite quilt. It’s also Quilting Day, so plan a memory quilt, made of your favorite old t-shirts.
