I Really Love Trees

A man in Alabama, took being a tree-hugger, to the next level. Abubakar Tahiru is studying forestry, after developing a love for nature conservation while growing up in Ghana. He recently set a world record, for hugging the most trees, in 1 hour. Quickly moving through Tuskegee National Forest, Abubakar hugged 1,123 trees!

The Bitterns Are Back

In 1964, a hydropower project in Tasmania, flooded the wetland ecosystem known as the Lagoon of Islands. The wetlands were home to the elusive Australasian bittern, a nocturnal heron-like bird. The dams were eliminated in 2012, but the bitterns have only recently come back. The Lagoon’s ecosystem has finally recovered!

Volcano Rains Gold In Antarctica

There’s a volcano in Antarctica, with a special talent. Along with volcanic bombs of molten rock, Mount Erebus spews out plumes of gas and steam, filled with flecks of gold. Scientists estimate it ejects about $600 worth of gold, every day. Gold dust has been found more than 600 miles away!

Dance Off the Walls

Today is We Jump The World Day, celebrating Parkour. Also known as free running, it requires impossible-looking jumps and catapulting off walls! It might be easier to celebrate International Dance Day, by dancing all day long! It’s also Zipper Day, so use your jacket zipper to create a funky rhythm.

Carnegie Medal Awarded to Teen Hero

Last year, 17-year-old Jakob Thompson rescued a woman who was caught in a Florida canal, where a current was pulling her out to sea. Jakob was recently awarded the Carnegie Hero Award, for his brave actions. Along with the Carnegie Medal, he received a full scholarship, to the Boynton Fire and Rescue Academy.

The Spring Peepers Are Singing

Frogs are amazing amphibians. It’s fascinating to visit a pond, and watch tiny tadpoles, grow bigger and develop legs. Frogs are an indicator species, meaning land and water pollution, really affect their health. Frog populations suffer, when environmental health declines. Today is Save The Frogs Day, so let’s help all 2000 species.

Do you have a dog, cat, or other pet? Give yourself a pat on the back, for being a responsible and caring pet owner. Today is Pet Parents Day, but don’t expect a present from your pet. Just be happy they don’t leave you a “package” that you have to clean up, ha-ha!
