Today is Johnny Appleseed Day, 1 of 2 days celebrating John Chapman. He traveled around the United States, planting orchards of apple trees. He used his tin hat as a pot, and ate out of it! It’s also Worship Of Tools Day, so polish your hammer and charge up your drill. Tools are wonderful things.

Smurfing A New Record

A wave of blue swept through France on Saturday, as a world record-breaking 3549 people dressed as Smurfs, attended the Starry Moon Carnival. In order to be counted, all visible skin had to be blue. Gargamel was not welcome. I wonder if they all sang a happy song together!

Plug Your Phone Into This Stinky Fruit

The poor durian fruit. It has such a strong smell that it’s forbidden in many hotels and taxis in Asia. Singapore has banned the smelly durian from the entire public transportation system! Researchers in Australia however, found that durian and jack-fruit make excellent super-capacitors. They store energy, and can charge electronic devices in seconds!

The Walls are Meowing

When a Massachusetts family’s cat went missing, they didn’t have to search very far. The curious cat had gotten trapped inside the walls of their house! The Falmouth Fire Rescue Department had to cut a hole through the wall, in order to get the mischievous kitty out! Luckily, the cat was not hurt.

The Water Turned to Wine

A village in Italy was surprised, to find wine coming out of the water faucets. A winery near Settecani had experienced a leak in a storage silo, causing the wine to enter the water supply. Some residents took advantage of the malfunction, to bottle as much wine as they could, before it was fixed!

LEGO Wants to Let Go of Plastic

The LEGO company uses over 6,000,000,000 tons of plastic each year. Although the building bricks don’t get thrown out, unless someone sweeps them up by accident, LEGO is still looking for ways to use more sustainable materials. They hope to have an alternative in the next 10 years, that will be better for the Earth.
