Sometimes people get scared to eat food, when it’s past the date marked on the container. In fact, food is often perfectly good long after that date. A company called Primitives is making compostable packaging, that can detect when food goes bad. It will change color when it detects harmful bacteria or chemicals.

Long-Lost Ring Returned

Back in 19 73, Debra McKenna’s boyfriend Shawn, gave her his class ring. She lost in Maine, before they got married. But recently, Marko Saarinen found the long-lost ring, buried 8 inches deep in a park, in Finland! He contacted the high school, and they determined it was Shawn’s. How it got to Finland is a mystery!

Amber, Bees and Grains

A new bee species has been identified, by a researcher in Oregon. The bee got stuck in tree resin, 100,000,000 years ago. The amber preserved both the bee, and its 21 beetle larvae parasites. The bee, named Discoscapa apicula, was also carrying pollen grains. Little did it know, it would provide such valuable information, 100,000,000 years later!

Would You Eat Mustard Ice Cream?

There’s a new ice cream flavor, if you’re brave enough to try it. Introducing, mustard ice cream! French’s mustard teamed up with Coolhaus Ice Cream to develop the unique treat. It’s not for sale just yet, but they plan to serve it in August along with pretzel cookies, in time for National Mustard Day.

Presidential Cabbage

In the United States, today is Presidents Day. It honors the first president, George Washington, and the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. They were both born in February, so their birthday party is celebrated on the 3rd Monday, right between the 2. Today also happens to be Cabbage Day, so eat cabbage cake! Sounds delicious, right?

Special Delivery

Jeanne Golato went into labor unexpectedly, while they were visiting Sea Isle City New Jersey for the weekend, but Sea Isle City doesn’t have a hospital. They called for an ambulance, and EMTs helped deliver baby Luciana at the house. It was the first birth in the city since 19 77! Mom and baby are fine.

Clothed in Plastic

Abbot Pranom is a Buddhist monk in Thailand. He has turned the Wat Chak Daeng temple, into a recycling center for plastic. A machine pulverizes plastic bags and bottles, which are sent to recycling plants to be turned into polyester fibers. Then the monks dye the polyester, to make their iconic orange robes.

Hemp Makes Honeybees Happy

Industrial hemp can be used to make paper, cloth, fuel, and health food. It’s versatile and easy to grow, but there’s another great reason to plant hemp. Bees love it! Since hemp blooms late in the summer, it gives bees a good pollen source, when other flowers are scarce.
