Youth Delegation is Roughing It

Greta Thunberg will be joining teens from around the world, at the World Economic Forum, in Davos Switzerland. Some of the young people attending the conference, will be staying in tents in sub-zero temperatures, in an area called Arctic Basecamp. They want to focus attention on the global risk of climate change.

Cloudy With a Chance of Iguanas

In Florida, unusual cold weather has been causing iguanas to fall from the sky. The large cold-blooded lizards have been falling from their perches in trees because they become immobile at low temperatures. They generally recover once they thaw out, so if you find frozen iguanas, move them to a sunny outdoor location.

China Takes Steps to Get Rid of Plastics

With a population of over 1.3 billion people, China is the world’s largest producer of plastic. They’ll start phasing out single-use plastics starting this year. Plastic bags, straws, cutlery, and carryout containers will be the first to go. They are also speeding up recycling rates, by opening innovative recycling centers across the country.

Support Your Local Bookstores

The Petersfield Bookshop in England is over 100 years old, but last week was the first day ever, where they didn’t sell a single book. They posted a photo of their empty shop to Twitter, and were afraid they’d go out of business. When author Neil Gaiman retweeted the post, book orders came flooding in!

Sweats, Hugs, Granola, and Fun

It’s Hugging Day! Hug a human, your pet, or your pesky brother, haha. It’s also Playdate Day and International Sweatpants Day! Dress casual, and have fun with friends. Make sure you have some granola bars, for an after-school snack, to celebrate Granola Bar Day. They’ll give you energy, to play for hours!

Squirrels Are Super

It’s Squirrel Appreciation Day! Over 200 squirrel species fit into 3 different types. There are ground, tree, and flying squirrels. The African pygmy squirrel is only 3 inches long, while the Laotian giant flying squirrel is 3 1/2 feet long! Squirrels are great reforesters. They plant thousands of trees every year by forgetting where they buried their nuts!

 

Finding Fido

Sun Jinrong, is a real-life pet detective in China. Over the last 7 years, he’s reunited more than 1000 animals with their families! He uses hi-tech equipment, like cameras with heat sensors and endoscopes, as well as tranquilizer darts to catch animals that are too skittish. He charges $1100 to solve a missing-pet case.
