The year you’re in 4th grade in the United States, you can get into any National Park for free! The Every Kid In A Park program was created by President Obama in 2015. 4th-graders can print a free annual pass, for them and everyone else in the car, at Every-Kid-In-A-Park.gov.

Today is World Ranger Day. With over 100,000 parks and protected areas around the world, park rangers are essential! In nature reserves where endangered species like elephants live, park rangers put their lives on the line, to protect animals from poachers. Park rangers help preserve the parks, so everyone can enjoy them forever!

Last week, scientists found a shipwreck at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. It’s an almost perfectly preserved ship from the Renaissance period, around the late 15th century. The ship’s masts are still standing, and even the tender boat, used to shuttle people to and from the ship, is in place against the mast!

Last month, The Planetary Society launched the LightSail 2 spacecraft into orbit. Last week, the spacecraft’s solar sails were unfurled! 4 triangular sails make one large 340-square-foot sail, which reflects photons from the sun. That’s enough to propel the sail, since there’s no resistance in space. Now it can sail around, sending us cool photographs!

2 years ago, people in India planted 66,000,000 trees in one day. Ethiopia just shattered that record! Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, organized an event where over 350,000,000 trees were planted in only 12 hours! He hopes to fight Ethiopia’s deforestation, by having 4,000,000,000 trees planted before October. Ahmed’s Green Legacy initiative is growing great!

Did you know fireflies are decreasing in number? Also known as lightning bugs, the glowing beetles are a victim of light pollution. If you are lucky enough to share a habitat with fireflies, you can help them by turning off your outdoor lights. They need to see their own lights in order to communicate!

Waylon McGuire’s wife loves shopping on Amazon, so he got her a very special birthday cake. Sweet Dreams Bakery created a cake that looked just like a brown Amazon box, complete with a shipping label! Emily was ready to open it at first, but was just as happy to cut into her delicious package!
