Earth and Moon, Old Friends Drifting Apart

Scientists believe the Moon was formed by a giant object crashing into the Earth’s crust. A new study shows how the Moon started separating from Earth 4 billion years ago. The hypothesis is that the Sun was weaker, most of Earth’s water was frozen, and a hot Moon bulged as its poles slowly froze.
