Footprint Filled With Sand

Scientists have determined that a 153,000-year-old footprint found in South Africa, was made by our own species. It’s the oldest Homo sapiens track ever discovered. The footprint is a natural cast, which is created when sand fills in a depression. Sometimes hardened sand casts, are located on cave ceilings.

Opossum Gets New Home and Free Food for Life

An opossum that hitched a ride to Alaska in a shipping container, has been captured after 2 months on the loose. The opossum, nicknamed Grubby, was concerning to local Fish and Game officials, because opossums are not native to Alaska, and could affect the local ecosystem. Grubby’s new home, is the Alaska Zoo.

Pretty Poisons

Old books are beautiful to look at, but some hold hidden dangers. Books published in the 18- hundreds, were often covered in green bookcloth, that contained arsenic, a deadly poison. The Poison Book Project also found led or mercury, in more than half of the colorfully-covered 19th-century books it tested.

His neighbors don’t appreciate the statues, or the stream of visitors they bring. The actors who voice Optimus and Bumblebee, spoke in favor of allowing the sculptures to stay.

Scientists did an experiment, where they put different-colored bags of potato chips on the ground, in front of seagulls. Then a person sat on a bench, eating a bag of chips. Nearly all of the seagulls, grabbed whatever color bag the person had. They trusted that humans picked the best-tasting chips.

Remembering Those We’ve Lost

Today is Memorial Day in the United States. Previously known as Decoration Day, it honors those who have died while serving in the military. The holiday also marks the beginning of summer, when pools and amusement parks open. Some lucky students have even finished the school year by now!
