Today is Barbie Doll Day. Creator Ruth Handler’s first Barbie doll, went on sale September 6, 1959, 65 years ago! Barbara Millicent Roberts wore a black and white swimsuit, and came with blond or brown hair. Now, there are more than 1,000 different Barbies. Take Barbie out, for Play Outside Day!

Do you have a book you’ve been meaning to read, but never get around to it? Today’s the perfect day to get started. It’s Reed A Book Day and Fight Procrastination Day! Do all the things you’ve been putting off, as long as one of those things includes reading.

Did you know, today is Beard Day? The longest beard ever recorded belonged to Hans Nilson Langseth. His beard was 17 1/2 feet long! It can be tough to grow a nice beard, but you can always wear a fake one. You can even draw one on with markers. Don’t forget the sideburns!

The Denver Botanic Gardens in Colorado, held a worldwide competition, called the Water Lily Weigh Off. The contest to see who could stack the most weight onto a giant water lily pad before it sank, was won by Florida’s Bok Tower Gardens. They loaded a 6-foot wide lily pad, with 183 pounds of weight!

Researchers in Colorado and Wyoming, found that many hikers were unaware of the rules against leaving their poop behind. If you have to go poop in nature, it’s best to pick it up in a bag, just like when you walk your dog. If you’re caught unprepared, bury it 6 inches deep.

Have you ever eaten a samosa? The South Asian and West Asian food is a fried pastry, filled with potatoes, peas, and spices, shaped like a triangle. Try one, for World Samosa Day. A good place to find them is at Indian restaurants, or you could look up a recipe, and make your own!

Are you running late? Great! It’s Be Late For Something Day. Be sure to use your perfect excuse for being late. It’s Cheese Pizza Day too. It’s great when you’re late, because you don’t need a plate! It’s also International Day Of Charity. It’s never too late to do something for those less fortunate.

Construction workers were renovating a school bathroom in Ontario Canada, when they found a wallet behind a wall. The wallet had been lost by 17-year-old Tom Schopf, 50 years ago. The school’s caretaker found Tom on Facebook, to tell him the good news. Tom, now 67, was thrilled to get his wallet back.

The Buffalo Zoo in New York, will introduce its new baby red panda to the public today. The female cub was born in June, to first-time mother Himalaya, and father Mogwai. She does not have a name yet, and is being hand-raised by zoo staff to make sure she stays strong and healthy.

Today is National Wildlife Day. What animals are native to your area? Animals that seem normal to you might be exotic to people in other parts of the world! They might have to go to the zoo to see a squirrel. Keep a bowl of water outside, and you’ll get plenty of animal visitors.
