A clever dog in Texas celebrated his 4th birthday, by breaking a world record. Jerry’s talent is removing bottle caps from plastic bottles. The dachshund removed 11 bottle caps, in only one minute. Once he’d opened everyone’s drinks, he was ready to party! I hope he got more plastic bottles for his birthday.

Most fires are caused by careless humans, but a recent brush fire in British Columbia Canada, was caused by a bird. An osprey caught a fish, and flew about a mile with it before losing its grip. The fish landed on a power line, causing sparks to fly onto the dry grass below.

Have you ever been scuba diving? SCUBA stands for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, so I see why it needed an acronym. The first scuba gear was unveiled in France, on this day in 1926. Scuba diving made it possible for anyone with a bit of training, to explore deep under the ocean.

Wearing masks when you’re sick, can help stop the spread of illnesses. That means the person who smells your bad breath the most, is you! Today is Fresh Breath Day, so do yourself a favor. Brush your teeth, because plaque stinks! Don’t forget to floss the particles, from between your teeth.

To celebrate Root Beer Float Day, A&W restaurants are giving them away! Originally called a black cow when it was first invented in 1893, the drink is simply root beer with vanilla ice cream. Drink it while giving your toes a little freedom in the sand, grass or water. It’s Wiggle Your Toes Day!

Today is Oyster Day, celebrating the bivalve mollusks with irregularly shaped shells. Oysters live in salt-water, and breathe through gills. They gather in large groups, to form oyster reefs. Oysters form pearls, when a parasite or grain of sand, gets inside. It coats the irritant in layers of nacre, to protect itself.

What color is at the top of a traffic signal? In the United States, it’s red, but it could be different in other countries. In Iceland, some lights have smiley faces on them! Many cities have a yellow light to warn you, before the light turns green. International Traffic Light Day celebrates them all.

Hey, what’s under there? Under where? That’s what I thought! It’s Underwear Day, so wear your most fun-derwear, and read Captain Underpants. It’s also Work Like A Dog Day. Working dogs, like sheep dogs, love their jobs and do them with enthusiasm. Get excited and wag your tail, while you do your chores today.

Have you seen any shooting stars this month? The Perseid meteor showers are visible every night, but August 12th-13th will be the peak. As the Earth passes through fields of comet waste, the debris burns up, causing the shooting stars in our skies. Have some wishes lined up, for each one you see.

Are you aware, it’s Owl Awareness Day? Owls come in many sizes, from the 6-inch tall elf owl to the Blakiston’s fish owl, which has a 6 1/2-foot wingspan! Owls can only look straight ahead, but they can turn their heads so far to either side, that they can see what’s behind them.
