In the Northern Hemisphere, today is the longest day of the year, known as the summer solstice. At the North Pole, the sun will be shining for 24 hours! In Earth’s Southern Hemisphere, however, today is the winter solstice, with the fewest daylight hours. The South Pole won’t see the sun at all!

You wouldn’t normally want to knock a laptop computer to the ground, but a computer and recycling company in Indiana, did just that. They set up 2,910 laptops like dominoes, then knocked them all down in a chain reaction. They set a world record, while reminding people of the importance, of recycling old electronics.

But Were They Ticklish?

Did dinosaurs have belly buttons? Thanks to high-tech laser imaging, paleontologists say they did. A 125,000,000-year-old fossil of a Psittacosaurus, clearly showed scales surrounding an umbilical scar, similar to those in lizards and crocodiles. Although it’s more of a slit, it’s still called a belly button. Now we know dinosaurs had them.

Low Waters Expose Hidden Objects

The Po River in Italy, is facing the worst drought in 70 years. Northern Italy hasn’thad rain in more than 110 days. As the water levels dropped, a sunken ship appeared. Called the Zibello, the shipwreck was a 160-foot barge, that sank in 19 43. It used to carry wood during World War 2.

For American Eagle Day, let’s learn about the bald eagle. The North American birds get their distinctive white-feathered heads around age 5. They pair up for life, and work on the same nest every year. The largest nest was 20 feet deep and nearly 10 feet wide, leaving room for their massive 7-foot wingspan!

Talk to the Goose

A neighborhood in Utah, has been terrorized by a goose for a month. Nicknamed Gangsta the Goose, the aggressive bird was acting as a bodyguard, for a mother duck. Gangsta attacked anyone who got close to her nest of eggs. Now that the ducklings have hatched, Gangsta escorts the whole family to the lake.

The Absolutely Amazing Albatross

Today is World Albatross Day. The albatross has the largest wingspan of any bird, measuring 12 feet across! They can travel 500 miles a day, soaring 80 miles-per-hour without even flapping their wings. Albatrosses can go for years without touching land, and touching water only to get food. Scientists believe they sleep while flying.
