In the Star Trek Universe in 2063, Zefram Cochrane took his first flight at speeds faster than Warp 1, in the Phoenix. It alerted the Vulcans of Earth’s entrance into the interstellar community. Today is Star Trek First Contact Day. Watch some episodes of Star Trek, learn a little Klingon, and live long and prosper!

Douglas Smith has a tiny greenhouse, and one amazing tomato plant. He set a world record, by harvesting 1,269 cherry tomatoes, from a single stem. He also holds the record for the UK’s tallest sunflower, which was 20 feet tall. Next, he wants to set a record, growing garden peas, so stay tuned!

Okra is an edible seed pod, that many people enjoy fried. It’s also being used, to clean microplastics out of water. Researchers have found that okra extracts are sticky, and attract microscopic pieces of plastic, which then clump together and sink in water. Then the plastics are easy to separate out. That’s pretty neat!

Did you know, it’s Fun Day? You can make anything fun, if you give it a new twist. For example, don’t walk in straight lines. Since it’s also Walk Around Things Day, walk around every pebble, or walk around your mom. It’s also World Rat Day, so give all the rats a friendly wave.

Have you ever tried to go to a website, and gotten a 4O4 error, “not found” message? Since today is April 4th, it’s 4O4 Day. If you want information, you can find it at the library instead. By the way, write your school librarian a thank-you-note, because it’s School Librarian Day.

Today is Vitamin C Day. Vitamin C is found in lots of fruits and vegetables, like oranges and spinach. It’s also Carrot Day, a good source of beta-carotene, which your body converts to Vitamin A! Eat your food outside, so your body can make Vitamin D from sunshine. Vitamins are the ABC’s of Health!

The Pompeii Archaeological Park, in Italy, has a new helper. Spot, a dog-like robot developed by U.S. firm Boston Dynamics, roams the ancient ruins of the city, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption nearly 2,000 years ago. Spot looks for dangerous tunnels dug by relic thieves, and locates other safety issues.

Friday night was the beginning of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of prayer and fasting. Most Muslims will fast from dawn until dusk each day, meaning no food or drink while the sun is shining. They celebrate a meal with family or friends at night. Some communities decorate with outdoor lights, like at Christmas.
