Today is World Health Day, commemorating the creation of the World Health Organization. This year’s theme is,  “Together for health. Stand with science.” Scientists around the world work together, to safeguard the health of humans, animals, plants, and the environment. Research and scientific evidence result in better disease prevention for everyone.

Flight Delay of the Bumblebee

A flight to California from North Carolina was delayed, due to bees. A swarm of bees had landed in the airplane’s turbine, and beekeepers had to come out and remove them. Swarms are common in springtime, as bee colonies set out with their queen, in search of a new home.

Tennis in Miniature

Today is World Table Tennis Day. It’s a lot easier to fit a ping-pong table in your house, than a tennis court. Table tennis began as a parlor game in Victorian England, and became an Olympic Sport in 19 88. If you don’t have a ping-pong table in your house, use your dining room table instead!

Jump over Cats, Tomatoes, and Twinkies

Today is Twinkie Day. The cream-filled sponge cake snacks, have been around since 1930. It’s also Fresh Tomato Day, which isn’t nearly as sweet, but is equally squishable. Keep them protected, while you celebrate Jump Over Things Day. It’s also Siamese Cat Day, so invite a kitty to jump over things with you!

Is Caramel Too Sticky for Non-Stick Pans?

Yum-yummy-yum, today is Caramel Popcorn Day! The salty-sweet treat has been around since the 18-hundreds. It’s Teflon Day too. If you make your own caramel corn, you’ll be thanking Roy Plunket for inventing Teflon, or polytetraflouroethylene, and Marion Trozzolo for the Happy Pan. Teflon is the non-stick coating that makes cookware easy to clean!

Meet the Cheetah Quartet

The San Diego Zoo in California, has named their 4 cheetah cubs. Mom Kelechi’s little boys are named Nyasi, Owadgi, Ohani, and Nkala. The brothers will form a lifelong group, called a coalition. There are only around 7,000 cheetahs left in the wild, so zoo breeding programs help to save the species.

Let’s Go on a Rock Walk

Using a map app on your phone is handy. But today, on Reed A Road Map Day, unfold a paper map, to get a bigger picture and see exactly where everything is. Use it to take a walk, and collect rocks, since it’s Geologists’ Day. What kind of rocks did you find?
