Jeanne Golato went into labor unexpectedly, while they were visiting Sea Isle City New Jersey for the weekend, but Sea Isle City doesn’t have a hospital. They called for an ambulance, and EMTs helped deliver baby Luciana at the house. It was the first birth in the city since 19 77! Mom and baby are fine.

Clothed in Plastic

Abbot Pranom is a Buddhist monk in Thailand. He has turned the Wat Chak Daeng temple, into a recycling center for plastic. A machine pulverizes plastic bags and bottles, which are sent to recycling plants to be turned into polyester fibers. Then the monks dye the polyester, to make their iconic orange robes.

Hemp Makes Honeybees Happy

Industrial hemp can be used to make paper, cloth, fuel, and health food. It’s versatile and easy to grow, but there’s another great reason to plant hemp. Bees love it! Since hemp blooms late in the summer, it gives bees a good pollen source, when other flowers are scarce.

A New Kind of Bed

Scientists have been working with Syrian refugees, to develop a way to farm in the desert, using old foam mattresses. Instead of being sent to landfills, the foam is placed in containers with a nutrient solution. Then herbs and vegetables can be grown, using 75% less water. Old mattresses turn into desert garden beds!

A Swedish woman found something completely unexpected at an art show in Stockholm. Her 20-year-old cassette tape was part of Mandy Barker’s Sea of Artifacts exhibit, about plastic pollution. Stella Wedell had made the mixtape when she was 12, and lost it on her vacation in Spain. It washed up on a beach 1200 miles away!

Giant Turtles Roamed the Earth

Fossil remains of the Stupendemys geographicus, a giant turtle, were found in Colombia and Venezuela. The turtle was the size of a car, and lived 7 to 13,000,000 years ago. The shell had horns on the front that were probably used like lances. One shell still had a crocodile tooth embedded in it!

Happy World Whale Day! Whales are mammals that live in the ocean, and can range in size from the 8-foot dwarf sperm whale, to the 98-foot blue whale, the largest creature that ever lived! Whales are endangered. Some species were nearly hunted to extinction. Whale songs can travel thousands of miles through the water!

Don’t Pet a Hippopotamus

Hippo Happy Day. I mean, Happy Hippo Day! Did you know, hippopotamuses give pink milk? Another crazy fact is, they can’t swim! They just walk underwater. They might look slow and harmless, but be careful; they kill around 3000 people a year. Also, they fling poop with their tails, to mark their territory!

What Has a Long Tongue and Scales

Today is World Pangolin Day! Pangolins live in Asia and Africa. They are the only mammal with scales. The nocturnal animals can have tongues that are longer than their bodies! They curl into balls for protection, but it doesn’t work against humans. Pangolins are endangered, and are the most smuggled animal in the world.
